Potranco Branch Library Celebrates a Successful First 60 Days on January 4

The co-located Potranco Branch Library and Mays Family YMCA at Potranco opened to great fanfare on Friday, November 4, 2016.  The two organizations in partnership with Council District 6  hosted a ceremony and ribbon cutting followed by tours of the 58,000 square foot facility.

Over 2,600 people visited the Library space during the four-hour grand opening, including Mayor Ivy R. Taylor and District 6 Councilman Ray Lopez. Visitors to the Library played games, posed for green-screen photos, and checked out materials. They were also invited to tour the unique and innovative spaces inside the Library that offer access to a dynamic family of services and resources.

Potranco Branch Library  is 5,000 square feet and  features a 900 square foot exterior courtyard, an interactive maker space, a quiet study area, a 1,525 square foot extended hours self-service lobby shared with the YMCA, and a children’s discovery area. Other spaces in the Library include a full-service computer area with free Wi-Fi, and of course a collection of popular materials. Potranco Branch Library is also home to the San Antonio Public Library system’s only collection of vinyl records available for check out and a self-service laptop checkout kiosk.

The Library was a voter-approved 2012-2017 bond project. This project was an adaptive reuse of an old grocery store building that had been vacant for 12 years. Project architects utilized many environmental practices to efficiently co-locate the library branch within a YMCA. Environmental features of the project include: use of existing concrete as flooring; 100% LED lighting throughout the facility indoor and outdoor; minimal building demolition; use of sustainable building materials for exterior finishes, recyclable metal framing and courtyard faencing; use of low water consumption equipment and fixtures; and daylighting with skylights and new windows.

With this unique partnership with the YMCA, the Library has already become a welcoming community gathering place and a cornerstone of family, cultural and civic life in the growing Northwest San Antonio community. During the month of November, Potranco Branch Library received over 15,900 visits and circulated approximately 15,500 items. During the month of December, the branch received 11,140 visits and circulated over 13,000 items. Library staff have already hosted dozens programs like chalk art and LEGO building for children, Perler bead designs and a Star Wars trivia night for teens, and a Winter Family Fun event.

Thanks to this project, the community can explore all that the San Antonio Public Library has to offer.

The Potranco Branch Library is the San Antonio Public Library’s 29th location.  Visit mysapl.org for more information about the branch including hours of operation, location and upcoming events.  Check out video from our grand opening bit.ly/PotrancoBranchLibrary
