August 6 in San Antonio history...

1918 – World War I
San Antonio may establish municipal shoe shining parlors for soldiers with a maximum charge of 5 cents for a shine as a result of an increase in prices by local shoe shining parlors.  Tentative plans favor establishment of the city shine parlors on the Houston and Commerce Street bridges and Alamo Plaza.

It’s a close call but no one is injured in a mid-air crash of a Cessna 172 and an Air Force T-38 Talon.  The collision shears the nose off the Cessna but the pilot, Frederick Barney of San Antonio, glides to a landing on Loop 1604.  The two occupants of the T-38 ejected to safety.

Ground is broken for the new Central Library building at 600 Soledad Street.
