August 9 in San Antonio history...

1918 – World War I
Three thousand eight hundred skilled mechanics will arrive at Kelly Field in the near future to take special training in the Kelly Field Enlisted Mechanics’ Training Department, according to information received by Major George E. Stratemeyer, officer in charge of the training school.

1946
A new telephone exchange designated as “Circle” will provide 1,000 additional telephones in San Antonio’s business district, Southwestern Bell Telephone Co. officials announced today.

1982
Radio station KTSA promised a 1,000 pound American buffalo to the first Native American group that could coax one inch of rain from the skies within 48 hours.  The Comfort Indian Rain Dancers assembled outside the Alamo but showers rained out the event before the dancing could begin. “We told everybody that if the drought continues, we’ll do it again,” said station manager Lee Randall.
