April 13 in San Antonio history...

The new thriller “The Phantom of the Opera,” starring Lon Chaney, begins a four-day engagement at the State theater.

Dillard’s reaches an agreement with the Allied Stores Corporation and their new owner, the Campeau Corporation, to purchase the 27 Joske’s stores in Texas and Arizona.  Some of the Dillard stores in Texas have competed with Joske’s, and William Dillard Sr., Dillard’s chairman, called the merger ”an important strategic step for our company, which will significantly enhance our presence in Texas and Tennessee.”

Singer Linda Ronstadt performs at the first day of grand opening festivities for the Museo Alameda.  The Friday the 13th scheduling proves unlucky as she is forced to end her performance after only two songs due to a storm system bringing high winds and heavy rain.
