August 22 in San Antonio history...

The polio ward at Robert B. Green Hospital holds a joint celebration for Billie Yoakum, who is in the ward for treatment after a three-month stretch in an iron lung a while back, and Patricia Stephens, who has now been out of the iron lung for five days and nights.

If new sources of water are not found for San Antonio in the next four years, the city is going to be up a creek and a dry one at that. This was the contention today of R. A. Thompson Jr., general manager of the water board, as he outlined San Antonio’s future water needs.

San Antonio Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela fans 15 batters in a 3-0 win over Amarillo.  The 19-year-old lefty allows just two hits in the second half of the season and strikes out 162 batters in 174 innings.
