Sylvia Mendez & Her Family's Fight for Desegregation

Separate is Never Equal by Duncan Tonatiuh

In the summer of 1944, Sylvia Mendez and her brothers try to enroll in a new school in California, but they are denied because they are Mexican-American. Sylvia's father tries repeatedly to get his children into the better public school, but everyone tells him no. Her parents finally realize that to get their children the education they deserve, they will need to bring a lawsuit against the school and try to end segregation in the courts.

In Separate is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez and Her Family's Fight for Desegregation by Duncan Tonatiuh, discover how the Mendez family battled to end segregation in California schools ten years before the Supreme Court case Brown v Board of Education ended segregation in schools nationwide.
