Walking on Earth & Touching the Sky

Poetry and Prose by Lakota Youth at Red Cloud Indian School

Walking on Earth and Touching the Sky

November is Native American Heritage Month, which is a time to recognize the indigenous people and cultures of North America.

Walking on Earth & Touching the Sky edited by Timothy P. McLaughlin is a collection of poetry and prose from students at Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Reservation. Their moving poetry and prose beautifully articulates complex emotions that reflect their endeavors to balance traditional Lakota heritage with the present-day world. Their writings, S.D. Nelson's illustrations, and chapter introductions by the editor also highlight different aspects of the Lakota culture.
