April 1 in San Antonio history...

1936
Texas drivers, for the first time in history today, are required to have a license for operating a motor vehicle.

1949
A photograph of the Goodyear blimp moored to the Transit Tower is shown on the front page of the San Antonio Light.  It’s just an April Fool’s joke.  The blimp is in San Antonio for a week but it is being kept at Municipal Airport.  

1969
The San Antonio Express reports that the first Ford Maverick was presented to San Antonio’s Jim Maverick, grandson of Samuel Maverick, the famous Texan from whom the car gets its name.  The car will be officially introduced to the market by Ford dealerships throughout the nation on April 17.
