August 3 in San Antonio history…

1974
Elvis Presley has scheduled a San Antonio concert for October 8 at the Convention Center Arena.  Tickets go on sale today at the Arena box office for $5, $7.50 and $10.  One must bring a cashier’s check, money order or cash and a self-addressed stamped envelope for the tickets to be mailed to you.  You may also mail your cashier’s check or money order and the self-addressed stamped envelope to San Antonio Ticket Service, P. O. Box 6588, San Antonio 78209.  Please indicate how many tickets you wish to purchase.

1974
After an 11-day prison break attempt, San Antonio drug kingpin Fred Carrasco is killed in a shootout at Huntsville.  Carrasco, Rodolfo Dominguez, and two hostages die in the attempt.  Another hostage, Prison Chaplain Rev. Joseph O’Brien, is wounded in the chest and left arm.  Two inmate hostages are also slightly wounded.

2003
Legendary sportswriter and TV sportscaster Dan Cook writes his final column for the San Antonio Express-News.  The column is entitled: 1952 – The Fat Lady Has Sung – 2003: “No regrets and no complaints after 51 years.”
