September 18 in San Antonio history...

1837
The first city election takes place (19 votes cast for Mayor: 15 for John W. Smith, 2 for Antonio Navarro, 1 for Francisco Ruiz and 1 for J. Croco).

1917
Instead of Camp Funston, the officers will train at the newly named Camp Stanley, named for Gen. David Stanley, former commander of Ft. Sam Houston.

1964
MacArthur High School is presented with a victory bell.  The bell, more than 140 years old, is presented to the school at ceremonies preceding the MacArthur-Harlandale football game at North East Stadium. It was found in response to a plea recently to the Coast Guard Recruiting Station from Jayne Harris, MacArthur head cheerleader, who asked if the recruiters could locate a “victory bell.” Chief Boatswain’s Mate F. Powers, Boatswain’s Mate 1C Richard F. Batista and Yeoman 1C James W. Dyer found the bell was available at the  Santa Rosa Coast Guard Station off Pensacola, Fla., where it was being replaced by a modern electric power horn.
