May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Let’s celebrate by reading Measuring Up by Lily LaMotte -- a graphic novel about 12-year-old Cici, an aspiring chef who has just moved to Seattle from Taiwan with her family. Cici gradually gets used to life in her new country, while trying to stay true to her Taiwanese heritage.
She’s making friends, but she desperately misses her grandmother who remained in Taiwan.
She enters a cooking contest with the hopes of winning the cash prize in order to buy her grandmother a plane ticket. Will her plan work even though she only cooks Taiwanese cuisine? Will she be able to bring her grandmother to Seattle?
